Bloody Sunday
Six hundred marchers assembled in Selma on Sunday, March 7. The marches were led by John Lewis. Just short of the bridge, they found their way blocked by Alabama State troopers and local police. They ordered the marchers to turn around. The protesters refused to turn around. The officers then shot tear gas and waded into the crowd, beating the nonviolent protesters with billy clubs. They ultimately hospitalizing over fifty people.
